Your puppy's first groom: a stress-free guide
By Maya Kowalski · 6 min read
The first groom sets the tone for a lifetime of salon visits. Done right, your puppy learns the table, the dryer and the clippers are just part of a fun outing with treats. Done rushed, and you're undoing nerves for months. Here's exactly how we recommend starting.
When to book
After the second round of vaccinations — usually 10 to 12 weeks. The appointment itself is short: a bath, gentle blow-dry, nail trim, ear clean and a tidy of the face and paws. No full haircut yet; the goal is confidence, not style.
Three practice games for home
- Touch the toes: handle each paw daily, rewarding calm stillness. Ten seconds beats ten minutes.
- Hum of the dryer: run a hairdryer on low in the same room during meals so the sound predicts good things.
- Table time: practice standing on a non-slip mat for treats — the same setup we use in the studio.
What to bring
Vaccination records, your puppy's favorite treats, and a chew for the ride home. Skip breakfast right before the visit — a slightly hungry pup works harder for rewards.
After the visit
Expect a tired, proud little dog. Book the second visit within three to four weeks while the memory is fresh, and keep handling paws and ears at home between appointments.
